Konkan League 2023 – Cricket and Throwball Tournament

For the first time, MUKA Nottingham organised the ‘Konkan League 2023 – Cricket and Throwball Tournament’ on Saturday, 17th June 2023, at Shirebrook County Cricket Club. This event brought together three Konkani communities from across the UK—South Kanara Association (SKA) London, Konkani Cultural Association (KCA) Manchester, and MUKA Nottingham—to participate in a day of friendly sports and cultural unity.

The event commenced with a formal inauguration ceremony hosted by Mr. John Fernandes. Mr. Godfrey Sequeira, President of MUKA, welcomed all guests. Mr. Stany Sequeira led the opening prayer. Presidents of all three associations officially inaugurated the tournament. Throwball was inaugurated by Mrs. Jenifer Fernandes and team captains. Both tournaments were played in high spirits. The day included ceremonial oaths, organised match scoring, and cheerleading support.

Participation was enthusiastic across all teams. Scoreboards, referees, commentators, and volunteers ensured a well-managed experience. Supporters contributed through cheerleading, and the atmosphere remained spirited throughout. The event concluded with an award ceremony, recognising the top performers and teams.

Special thanks to all team players, volunteers, umpires, commentators, and supporters. Lunch was provided by Mr. Ajay, Nottingham. Video coverage was done by Ms. Sonal Mendonca and Ms. Jessica Aranha. Sponsors included Tharavadu (Leeds), Freedom Mortgage, Fresh Deliverers, and East West Trends.

The tournament was a successful celebration of Konkani unity through sport. Winning teams included KCA Manchester (Cricket) and MUKA Nottingham (Throwball). Future iterations of the Konkan League are expected to strengthen inter-community bonds further. Video highlights can be viewed here.
